Petrol prices across Melbourne have dropped to a six-year low, with Melton being one of the beneficiaries.
Unleaded petrol prices in Melton dropped to as little as 100.9 cents a litre last week, with nearby outlets in Sunshine, Yarraville and Newport following suit.
The RACV’s Michael Case said current petrol prices averaging about 104.9 cents a litre for unleaded fuel were “very good”.
The last time petrol prices were this low in Melbourne was in January, 2009, Mr Case said.
He said that although the future of petrol prices was unpredictable, more service stations were likely to start selling fuel at 99.9 cents a litre or less in the near future.
“We would expect with the wholesale price continuing to decrease, that will translate to retail fuel prices,” he said.
Mr Case said low fuel prices meant savings for motorists and families.
“Compared to four months ago, the fuel is around 40 cents a litre cheaper,” Mr Case said. “If you were to fill the average family vehicle with 60 litres of fuel [now] you would be saving $25, which is enormous. If you use a tank of fuel per week then it translates into potentially a weekly saving of $25.
“If you keep filling up when [or where] fuel is cheaper, you can save a significant amount of money in the long term.”
But while fuel is getting cheaper by the day, Mr Case said motorists should still look out for price variations. He said some regional service stations were yet to see price drops, with some across regional Victoria still selling unleaded fuel for about 125 to 130 cents a litre.
“[This] is way too high given what’s happened to world oil prices and local retail fuel prices – they should be much lower,” he said.
