Cereals, toast, hot chocolate and pancakes are just a taste of what’s on the menu for Bacchus Marsh’s new school breakfast clubs.
The local Rotary Club has teamed up with schools to serve students the most important meal of the day.
Clubs were launched at Bacchus Marsh Primary School and Bacchus Marsh Secondary College this term and have already been successful in encouraging more students to eat breakfast.
Rotarian Alf Pearson said it was important to serve breakfast to students.
“It’s very important they start their day with food in their stomach,” he said. “It’s medically proven that your brain kicks into gear a lot quicker and a lot stronger when you’ve eaten.”
Mr Pearson said the project was also an important mentoring initiative, enabling students to chat to Rotarians, their teachers and police officers in informal surroundings. “It’s a program that’s rewarding to everyone in it,” Mr Pearson said, “and it’s a program that was needed in the community.”
Bacchus Marsh Primary School well-being co-ordinator Anne Phyland said breakfast at school was a great social interaction for students because they sat together to eat.
“It not only enables them to have a hearty breakfast to start their day but it helps with their learning,” she said.
With the help of donations from Coles, the Rotary Club hopes to widen the project.
