Motorists have been warned not to leave broken-down cars unattended after one was smashed up on Melton Highway last week.
The Holden Cruze broke down about 5pm last Tuesday and was left at the side of the road.
When the driver returned about 6am the next day, the car’s windows had been smashed and the roof dented.
Melton police are investigating and are keen to speak to witnesses.
“There are long periods during the night when there are no cars driving by, giving offenders an ample opportunity to cause damage,” said Sergeant Ashley Ryan, of Sunshine Crime Scene Services.
“Our advice is not to leave vehicles for extended periods in secluded areas.
“If they break down, have them towed as soon as possible and don’t leave valuables inside.”
Sergeant Ryan said unattended vehicles presented easy access for criminals.
“Vehicle-related crime is a problem in all areas of Melton,” he said.
“We’re forever having thefts from, and thefts of, motor vehicles and vehicles damaged.”
Sergeant Ryan said the owner was devastated on returning to find the damaged car.
