Moorabool and Melton residents are being encouraged to have their say on improving council elections.
The consultation program will be part of a comprehensive review of Victoria’s local government electoral system.
Western Victoria Region MP Simon Ramsay said it was important that community members participated.
“Getting the best people to represent their communities is so important to ensuring optimal outcomes for each council,” he said.
The state government is seeking public feedback on 55 proposals, including universal postal voting and more information on candidates.
Nationals Buninyong candidate Sonia Smith said the review offered a great opportunity to have more women in councils.
“I think it’s a credit to all municipalities that we now have a female councillor in every council in Victoria,” she said.
The government commissioned the review, recently launched by Local Government Minister Tim Bull, in response to an unprecedented number of complaints to the Local Government Inspectorate and declining voter participation.
The two Local Government Electoral Review reports (stages 1 and 2) are available at www.dtpli.vic.gov.au/localgovernment with submissions accepted until Monday, November 3.
