Winter takes Moorabool, Melton suburbs by storm

Winter storms wreaked havoc on Bacchus Marsh, Melton South and Melton West this year.

After a relatively calm couple of years, more than 100 families across the city of Melton and Moorabool shire felt the brunt of wild weather in 2014.

Melton West was the hotspot for damage, with 19 properties affected over the winter months of June, July and August, compared to six in the previous year and seven in 2012. Bacchus Marsh had 18 properties damaged, compared to five and six for the two previous years.

A total of 14 properties were damaged in Melton South, compared to five last year and six in 2012.

About 110 calls to the SES about building damage, flooding and fallen trees were made across the two council areas over the three months – more than double last year’s 51 and 54 in 2012. Most suburbs and towns in the city of Melton and the Moorabool shire also reported increased storm damage.

Storms cost Victoria an average of $28 million in damage bills each year.

The SES has responded to about 15,500 requests for assistance already in 2014.

SES spokeswoman Kathryn Gould urged residents to be careful and learn about storm safety.

“Storms are dangerous and unpredictable,” she said. “Be aware of the dangers of severe weather and learn some simple, useful ways you can take responsibility for your own safety and that of your property.

“Being prepared before a storm hits can save you time and money. Make sure you secure loose items around your home and remove any overhanging tree branches.

“And never park your car under a tree during a storm.”
