Derrimut teen DJ in a spin for cancer research

When you’re 17, going to an underage dance event is the epitome of cool.

Derrimut teen Joshua Giovinazzo managed to pull off an even cooler coup recently when he hosted his own dance party and helped the Cancer Council at the same time.

The 17-year-old threw an underage dance event on the first weekend of the school holidays to raise money for cancer research.

The year 11 Lakeview Senior College student and DJ got four other DJs in on the act for the drug and alcohol-free event at Rockbank Hall attended by more than 100 people.

“I wanted to do a fundraiser for the Cancer Council because I have friends and family who have been touched by cancer, and if I can make a difference and help them get through it, I’m happy to help in any way possible,” he said.

Last week, Joshua donated the $600 he had raised to the Cancer Council, and he has set his sights on organising more fundraising events.

The teen, who also works part-time at McDonald’s, hopes to study medicine and sports science after graduating next year.

The donation comes in time for the current Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Brimbank council has called on the city’s women over 50 to book in for a free breast screen every two years. Call 13 20 50 or book online at www.breastscreen.org.au
