Big V men: Julie McCallum to coach Melton Thoroughbreds

Julie McCallum will coach Melton men’s Big V basketball side next season.

Jarrod Crowe and Michael McCallum will be her assistants.

Melton Basketball president Lucas Bourke believes the coaching structure will set up the association for years to come.

“Julie has been an extremely valuable assistant coach for a few years but was unable to fully commit as a head coach because of work commitments, despite being more than capable,” Bourke said.

“Her basketball knowledge and experience is vast and she already has a good rapport with the players.

“Along with Jarrod and Michael, we’re very excited about the improvements this group can make in 2014.”

McCallum replaces outgoing coach Mick Downie.

Melton is coming off a successful two years in the Big V after winning the division 2 premiership in 2013.

And in the club’s first season in division 1, the Thoroughbreds qualified for finals before being bounced out in a elimination final against the Southern Peninsula Sharks, 93-78.

Meanwhile, Melton’s youth men’s side will be led by Henry Kuo for season 2015.

Kuo, an assistant with the youth men this year, replaces Jarrod Crowe and will be joined by assistants Michael Gant and Erik Valka.

“Henry has quickly become one of our most valuable coaches in the short time he has been with us,” Bourke said.

“With his junior involvement, we see him as improving the link between our under-18 and under-20 teams and the youth program.”

Melton will now turn its attention towards assembling its 2015 playing rosters and will hold try-outs in the coming weeks.
