LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: July 16-22

Time to pass the ball

Sometimes, the best thing people can do to help a struggling sport is to step away and let new people with fresh ideas and energy take over (‘Save our comp plea to players’, Star Weekly, July 15).

Those involved have been servants of the Melton Netball Association for more than 20 years, but perhaps it’s time for them to move on for the betterment of the sport locally.

Gun claims off the mark

I am extremely disappointed with last week’s front page story (‘Guns fill police dragnet’, Star Weekly, July 15) which alarmingly stated that almost 6000 illegal firearms had been seized in Melton as part of a national operation.

This is completely incorrect and a disturbing error.

Operation Unification ran for two weeks from June 16 and focused on illicit firearms in the community.

Victoria Police seized 17 firearms across the state as part of this nationwide crackdown.

I have no doubt the inaccurate numbers in this article would have unnecessarily alarmed members of our community.

The figures that were inaccurately referenced related to the number of firearms legally registered to residents by postcode in 2012-13, not the number of firearms seized by police during last month’s operation.

There are a number of reasons people in our community can apply for firearms licences, including target shooting or vermin control. By law, these licensed firearms holders are obliged to ensure their firearms are stored securely to prevent them from being stolen and falling into the hands of criminals.

Illegal firearms are a concern for police across the state and Operation Unification was held to get these guns off our streets.

To suggest there were almost 6000 illegal firearms seized within our community is both unacceptable and misleading.

I want to reassure Melton residents they can be confident that police will continue to focus on illicit firearms.

We will continue to work hard to deliver the highest possible service to our community.

Melton Acting Inspector, Trevor King

Job satisfaction deserved

Well done, Garry Evans. It’s so nice to hear that you love going to work and are so happy in your new job as an aged-care worker (‘At last, Garry is doing what he wants’, Star Weekly, July 8).

They know how good you were on your placement, and you got offered a job before you finished your studies because they see great potential in you. Keep enjoying it.
