Help wanted to care for dying in Melton, Moorabool

A major health service provider wants volunteers to help care for terminally ill patients in the Melton and Moorabool council areas.

Djerriwarrh Health Services is on a recruitment campaign because of the number of people living longer.

“People born in 1945, the start of what is called the Baby Boom era, are turning 70 next year,” chief executive Bruce Marshall said. “It’s expected there will be a greater demand for palliative care because people are living longer.

“In turn, there’s a greater need for trained palliative care volunteers.”

Mr Marshall said prospective volunteers should contact the palliative care team.

They would be interviewed this month and successful applicants would be trained in August and early September.

Mr Marshall said volunteers would have to be available for three hours a week to provide a range of services to palliative care clients and their families in Bacchus Marsh and Ballan.

They would also need a strong commitment to confidentiality in the close-knit community and would have to agree to a police check.

Monthly meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month for supervision, education and meeting with other volunteers.

To express interest in volunteering, contact Peter Randall, palliative care volunteer co-ordinator, on 5367 9647 or by email on peterr@djhs.org.au.
