Melton Hockey Club puts faith in rising juniors

Melton is hoping to pick up some late-season wins in state league 3 men’s hockey.

The club is in seventh place on the ladder with a 2-8 record for the year – but coach Scott McLaren believes there are a lot of positives to come out of the season.

Although wins have been hard to come by, Melton has continued to develop its exciting batch of juniors.

“The results haven’t been the greatest, but it’s not a lost cause at all,” McLaren said.

“We have quite a few good young players who are coming through and progressing really well.

“A lot of the games, we’ve had a lot of possession – we’re just not turning possessions into goals.

“That has been our problem, especially over the past few weeks.

“Not putting the ball in the back of the net and then making a couple of mistakes at the back is something that has cost us.”

The Mustangs have a chance to test themselves against the league’s best team this week when they host table-topping St Bedes.

McLaren is hoping his current youngsters will lead the club up the ladder in future seasons.

“That is the way we have got to go and that’s what we’re focusing on,” he said.

“We want to get these guys as experienced as possible and see them develop.

“Some of the them are 15, 16 or 17 years old, and we’re playing juniors as well .

“Getting them into the team and building their experience is one of our main aims.”

Although the men’s team has struggled, it has been a different story for Melton’s women.

Melton is in fifth spot on the ladder with a 6-4-2 record.

After a tough 5-0 loss to ladder leader Knox last week, the Mustangs will have the perfect opportunity to bounce back on Saturday when they take on the eighth-placed Bayside Cougars.

The two sides last met in round four when the result was a 5-0 win to Melton.
