Kite Making and Flying
NAIDOC Week will be celebrated in Melton starting with the Bullum Bullum Kite Making Workshop on Wednesday, July 9 from 11am-1pm at the Melton Community Hall, 232 High Street, Melton. Families are encouraged to join in the festivities by making a white butterfly kite. Bullum Bullum means “white butterfly” and represents freedom of expression. The event will then be followed by a kite flying family day at the Bullum Bullum Aboriginal Place in Burnside on Saturday July 12 where families can fly their kites and enjoy a barbecue lunch. The day will be held at Carinya Park, corner Carinya Boulevard and Illawong Terrace, Burnside between 11.30am-1pm.

Solomon inspires solo show
Melton artist John Rigby’s first solo exhibition is inspired by the 3000-year-old works of Solomon, who wrote about life’s meaning. Using his perspective as backdrop, this exhibition invites viewers to look at what gives their lives meaning. It finishes on July 10, and is at the Melton Uniting Church, at 17 Yuille Street.

Take part in tree-planting
A Planet Ark tree-planting day will be held in Brookfield on July 27 by Melton Environment Group, with young and old invited to take part. All participants receive an indigenous plant, and free hot and cold drinks and snacks will be on hand. Meet at Arnolds Creek in Black Dog Drive, just west of the Coburns Road and Black Dog Drive roundabout. It starts at 10am.

Get with the band
The Western Region Concert Band is looking for percussion, brass and sax players to join the group. Rehearsals are held every Saturday from 9am at the Errington Community Centre, Princess Street, St Albans. Entry via side gate adjacent to the football oval. Melway map 26 A1.

Botanic Garden walk
A guided walk through the Melton Botanic Garden will be held on July 11, to see local indigenous plants from the region. The 90-minute walk is part of NAIDOC week celebrations, and will be followed by morning tea. It starts at 10am. Meet on the corner of Tullidge and William streets. Bookings essential.

Ladies Night Out
The inaugural Ladies Night Out event hosted by Princess Events in conjunction with Absolute Kaos Indoor Play Centre will be held on Friday August 15 from 7-10pm. Tickets are available for $10 and must be pre-purchased. The night will include free and discounted services and products including facials and massages.
