A Melton singing group is giving newly arrived and settled migrants the chance to show off their talents.
The group is run from Victoria University’s Melton campus and has been making music for almost two years.
Language and literacy education manager Graeme Lechte said students from a wide range of cultural backgrounds sang to improve their vocabulary and pronunciation.
“It also provides a great way of interacting socially,” he said.
“Sometimes students present songs from their own culture and this helps other students understand more about their background. Singing has become an important part of learning English.
‘‘Students enjoy singing and they learn many aspects of English along the way.”
Last week, the students performed at the Trinity Gardens Aged Care centre in Melton South.
