CHFL: Leaders Bungaree survive sloppy kicking

Bungaree’s eight-match unbeaten run in the Central Highlands Football League continued with a 23-point win on Saturday despite some sloppy kicking.

The inaccurate Demons had to survive a late comeback from Ballan to secure their 8.18 (66) to 6.7 (43) win.

Luke Mirtschin kicked four of his side’s eight goals in a best-on-ground performance, with Ballan playing-coach Mark Williams his side’s best.

The Demons now sit a game clear on the ladder after Learmonth lost its first game of the season to Buninyong, even though the winners didn’t kick a goal in the second half.

In a match between second and fourth, the Bombers led by 20 points at half-time, despite the two teams having the same number of scoring shots.

The Swans kicked the only three goals for the second half to make a contest of it but fell short, losing 7.5 (47) to 6.8 (44).

Daylesford controlled the game against Dunnstown from the first term to win 8.8 (56) to 4.6 (30).

The Towners were goalless in the opening quarter and managed only one goal for the first half.

They had only individual goalkickers, with Joel Quarrell named their best.

Gordon highlighted itself as a possible finals contender with a big win over Springbank, 13.12 (90) to 6.5 (41).

After a relatively even first quarter, the Hawks got the jump in the second quarter to open up a 30-point lead at half time.

They continued to dominate in the second half and extended the lead at every change.

Mick Nolan kicked three goals for the Hawks, with Luke Gunnell best afield.

For Springbank, Brandon Rix and Paul McMahon kicked two goals each with Tim Malone named the best player.

This week sees a meeting of the top two teams, Bungaree and Learmonth.

It will be a clash between the highest-scoring team in the league, Learmonth, against the side with the best defence, Bungaree.
