Bacchus Marsh call to film fans for Stray funds

A Bacchus Marsh filmmaker is creating a name for himself after travelling overseas to enter his short film, Yesterday’s News, in festivals across the US.

Back home, Steven Tandy is working on another short film that he hopes might one day make the big screen.

The 22-year-old says the film he took to the US, Strays, is a 22-minute drama filmed entirely in Bacchus Marsh which follows the lives of young outcasts Ruby and Riley, who, after an unfortunate chance encounter, get caught up in each other’s lives.

The “anti-revenge” film, says Tandy, is filled with shame, regret, violence and hope, and shows the disturbing consequences retaliation can have.

Tandy said that before receiving recognition overseas, he was unsure if he had taken the right pathway by following his dream to make films.

“I was self-conscious that I wasn’t going in the right direction, but this has really given me a lot of confidence.”

Tandy, who graduated from Swinburne University last year and works part-time, says his next, follow-up production is being self-funded … but he’s hit a stumbling block.

“We’re currently editing the film but have run out of money to pay for professional sound design and colour grading, as well as paying for film festival submissions and marketing,” he said.

So he’s requesting film-loving members of the community to open their wallets and contribute to a fund-raising campaign. Incentives include having donors’ names on the film’s credits and being invited to the cast-and-crew screening at Cinema Nova in Carlton.
