Service honours Gisborne CFA’s sacrifice

Gisborne CFA’s Peter Nicholas has been remembered at a memorial service at Fiskville Training College.

Wreaths for CFA members who died in the line of duty were laid at the foot of the Memorial Wall on May 4 – International Firefighters Day.

Mr Nicholas died on December 30, 2012 at a Gisborne fire.

“It is a time for reflection and just one of the ways we can remember the lives of 67 members who have given their lives in service to protecting our communities,” said Victoria CFA chief executive Mick Bourke.

The memorial wall was built following the death of 14 firefighters during the Ash Wednesday bushfires of 1993.

Representing Police and Emergency Services Minister Kim Wells, Western Victorian MP Simon Ramsay said the community was “forever grateful” for their work.

“Today we pause to remember … those CFA members who have paid the ultimate sacrifice protecting the lives of others,” Mr Ramsay
said.

CFA volunteer manager Kate Harrap said the service acknowledged those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

“Through loss, hardship and experience, we have learnt from all those who have come before,” Ms Harrap said.
