WIND FARM RESEARCH NEEDED

Good on John McMahon, for lobbying for independent noise testing at Moorabool’s Lal Lal wind energy facility (Weekly, March 25).

In March 2011, a Senate inquiry into the social and economic effects of rural wind farms recommended further research and a cautionary approach, due to the possible health effects if turbines were built too close to houses.

The dismissive attitude of Moorabool Environment Group president Rose de la Cruz, who discounted any evidence that wind farms caused medical problems, indicates she has not taken heed of any worldwide research being undertaken which points to evidence to the contrary.

She obviously hasn’t met with anyone in Victoria who has been adversely affected, some to the extent that they can no longer live in their homes.

If wind farms are to become part of our mix of renewable energy solutions, is it not a good idea to make sure that the production of clean, green power is done in such a way that there is an acceptable compromise between the proponents of the facility, landholders and neighbours?

ROAD WORK WOES

Works to upgrade the intersection of Coburn and Barries roads in Melton began about 12 months ago.

Since then, a temporary pedestrian crossing at Barries Road has been run over several times.

Projects to add traffic lights in Ferris Road and a roundabout at Melton Valley and Federation drives were completed in half the time it has taken to complete the very dangerous intersection at Coburn and Barries roads, which has even more traffic now the second stage of the Woodgrove shopping centre has opened.

RAVENHALL LANDFILL

As recently as August last year, Boral has had a licence to dump putrescible waste.

That is, decomposable waste, which according to the Environment Protection Authority can lead to vermin; seagulls; dust; odour; flies and other insects; fires; and surface and groundwater contamination by leachate. It is also permitted to dispose of pneumatic tyres and contaminated soil.

PARKING PROBLEMS

Melton council’s bylaws officers could have a field day in front of the WestWaters Hotel in Caroline Springs. Lazy people continue to park in a
no-standing area, making it dangerous for drivers and pedestrians coming from the car park at nearby Caroline Springs Square.

It is amazing that despite there being a car park above the hotel, and plenty of spaces across the road, so many people feel they have to park right out the front.
