Melton residents’ campaign to end traffic woes on busy roads

Residents are urging Melton council to keep pushing for state government funding to ease traffic congestion and improve safety on two busy roads.

Melton Residents Association president Peter Rowan said traffic on Norton Drive and Bulmans Road had reached peak levels.

Motorists fear it’s only a matter of time before an accident occurs.

Mr Rowan said the group had sent numerous letters to the state government and council calling for the installation of traffic management devices, but nothing had been done.

“We have received correspondence that the area does not warrant traffic devices, but this isn’t the information we are receiving from residents and traders in the area,” Mr Rowan said.

“It’s a bit of a nightmare for anyone trying to make a right-hand turn … you basically take your life into your hands.’’

Mr Rowan said Bulmans Road, between High Street and West Melton Drive, was particularly dangerous at school peak times. “We will continue to lobby the council and state government until something is done.”

Melton council engineering services manager Les Stokes said the intersection of Norton Drive and High Street was the responsibility of VicRoads. “Council is aware of the traffic issues at this location and continues to seek a commitment to safety improvements from VicRoads.”

Mr Stokes said that with residential growth set to continue, planning for the eventual duplication of Bulmans Road
was under way.
