Nine students at Melton Christian College are hoping a fund-raising barbecue next Tuesday will help a community in need.
The school is hosting a barbecue and basketball tournament, aptly nicknamed “the toilet drive”, to raise money for Kiu Community Christian School in the Solomon Islands, which has 300 students and no plumbed toilet.
“At the moment, the kids are forced to leave school and go home to use a toilet and they just don’t go back,” physical education teacher Laura Taylor-Payne says.
“They had two toilets but not enough money to install them so they just got abandoned. So we want to have it all hooked up for them.” Melton Valley Rotary Club is donating sausages and drinks, and local bakeries are offering bread.
The basketball tournament will be held in coming weeks.
