A new leaf in sustainability has been turned with what’s believed to be the state’s first waste-free house having been built in Melton South.
As part of constructing the house – known as Tierra 2300 – 99 per cent of waste from building material was diverted from landfill, surpassing an original reduction target of 80 per cent.

Burbank Homes managing director Jarrod Sanfilippo said the site’s reduced waste material would be used on developing local parkland.
Sustainability Victoria chief executive Stan Krpan said the project proved the residential construction sector could be ‘‘environmentally competitive’’. “Residential housing construction sends an average of 5.8 tonnes of waste to landfill each year, which equates to around 40 per cent of Victoria’s waste,” he said.
