A Melton cyclist is urging drivers to be more aware of bike riders after she was struck by a car.
Marnie Mullan was hit after dropping her daughter off at school.
She said she was riding on West Melton Drive when a car turning out of James Cook Drive hit her bike at low speed on February 18.
“When she got to the intersection she looked left and right, but not in front where I was,’’ Ms Mullan said.
“As she turned, she chipped my back wheel. I was lucky to have enough momentum that I was able to stop myself from falling. One second later and it could have been a lot worse.”
She said most concerning was that the driver who hit her didn’t even stop to see if she was OK.
“Is it too much to ask for people to just take a moment, slow down and look? It could just save a life.”
Melton Cycling Club committee member Fabian Zappone said many riders felt unsafe on local roads.
“Some drivers don’t care and they don’t take any notice of cyclists, even in the bike lanes,’’ he said.
“Some people are ignorant and others just don’t care.”
