Police plead for sanity and safety in holiday traffic

Police officers including Sergeant Michael Haschka (pictured) will be out in force during the Christmas holidays to crack down on drivers breaking laws on Melton and Moorabool roads.

Melton highway patrol’s Leading Senior Constable Allan Edwards says police are urging drivers to stick to speed limits and avoid drink-driving and fatigue.

Despite police issuing a warning earlier
this month after a series of deaths on Melton roads, it would appear not all drivers are listening.

Officers recently nabbed a man doing 120km/h in a 60 zone at Taylors Hill, while a stolen car struck a tree after a drag race with another car on Caroline Springs Boulevard.

“We say this every Christmas,’’ Leading Senior Constable Edwards said. ‘‘We are hoping drivers listen to these warnings.’’

Extra police are out on local roads as part of Operation Summer Stay, which is being run in four phases until January 5.
