VSDCA: Melton bitten again by wagging Altona tail

Melton has been undone by a last-wicket partnership for the third time in this east-west first XI Victorian Sub-district Cricket Association season as Altona left MacPherson Park victorious on Saturday.

Altona was in the box seat at 2-120 before a Melton comeback left Altona’s last pair at the wicket 15 short of victory.

James Grubb (21no) and Simon Jackson (5no) held on, winning on the penultimate ball of the match.

Melton was defending 6-200 made off 80 overs the previous weekend.

Nathan Allen (4-71) returned the best figures for the Lions.

Melton is in the unfamiliar surrounds of 11th on the 14-team ladder, its nine points being nine off the top-six pace of Box Hill (18).

In second XI, Melton won by 31 runs against Altona, 193 to 162. Jake Charge took 4-43 as Melton’s leading bowler.

In third XI, Melton powered past Altona’s 135 by making 6-272. Mark Jones (80), Jarrod Kennedy (62) and Nathan Pinder (50no) all made half-centuries for the Lions.

Melton’s fourths fell to defeat, with Altona making 206 in reply to 150.

The VSDCA representative team lost by one wicket at the weekend, going down to the Victorian Country Cricket League at Werribee on Sunday.

The VSDCA made 7-269 off 50 overs batting first, with Brendan McGuinness (87) and Tim O’Brien (42) top scoring.

VCCL reached 9-270 on the final ball of the match, with Sean Ayres (4-29) best of the VSDCA bowlers.
