A teenage girl jumped into Albert Park Lake to avoid arrest after she was involved in a high-speed pursuit.
The incident started when police from Melton chased a stolen white Nissan Pulsar on Gourlay Road, Taylors Hill, just before 1am on Friday.
The driver of the Nissan continued to evade police through Taylors Hill, Caroline Springs and along the Tullamarine Freeway, where the car reached 145km/h.
The driver then drove towards Melbourne and turned on to Kings Way, ignoring a red light. Police then stopped the chase due to safety concerns.
The Victoria Police Air Wing continued to monitor the car as it stopped on Lakeside Drive in Albert Park.
Police then arrested two girls on Lakeside Drive, while another teenage girl tried to avoid capture by jumping into Albert Park Lake. She was told to swim back to shore, and was arrested.
Two of the girls have been charged. One 15-year-old Burnley girl has been remanded in custody, and charged with car theft. She is expected to appear at a children’s court on Friday.
A 16-year-old girl, also from Burnley, has been bailed by police and charged with car theft, conduct endangering life, driving at a dangerous speed and driving in a dangerous manner, as well as other traffic offences.
The third girl, a 15-year-old, is still assisting police with their inquiries.
