Bowls Victoria: Bacchus Marsh looking secure in fourth

Bacchus Marsh has opened a gap between fourth and fifth on the division 1 ladder thanks to its one-shot win against Kyneton on Saturday.

The 14-87 to 4-86 win means Bacchus Marsh (77) has a handy lead over Kyneton (64). Justin Webster’s 28-18 win against Gordon Dickeson was the biggest rink in Bacchus Marsh’s favour.

At Woodend, the home team took second spot at visiting Kyneton Golf’s expense with a 16-101 to 2-83 triumph.

Toby Williams became the first skip to beat Kyneton Golf’s Rick Turner this season as his rink won 30-19. Matthew Bacon kept his unbeaten record with a 24-14 win against Kyneton Golf’s Dan Lonsdale.

Ladder leader Lancefield won 14-103 to 4-96 at Trentham. Peter Linehan won 30-18 against Paul Ulrik to continue his unbeaten start to the season, while John Bamford was Lancefield’s other rink winner – 27-22 against Bernie Halpin.

Lancefield (108) leads the league from Woodend (90) with Kyneton Golf (82) third. In the weekend’s other match, Romsey won, 16-96 to 2-88, against Gisborne.

Bacon leads all skips (7/7, +80), while Linehan (7/7, +58) joins him in the last remaining unbeaten pair in the division to have skippered seven matches.

In division 2, Mt Cottrell won for the second time this season, 16-93 to 2-76, against Diggers Rest.

The result failed to move Mt Cottrell off the foot of the table, although its 42 points are within striking distance of fourth-plaed Diggers Rest (59).
