Moorabool’s sixth Relay for Life has raised more than $101,127 to support cancer research, education and patient support programs.
More than 400 people descended on Maddingley Park for this year’s Cancer Council event on September 21.
Organiser Gillian Loughman said it was “overwhelming” to know that the fund-raiser had provided more than $400,000 over past five years.
This year, more than 400 cans of food were also donated to Bacchus Marsh’s Neighbours’ Place food bank.
“Everyone was in high spirits and it was a day of brilliant sunshine and so much emotion,” Ms Loughman said.
Troy Nash, who was diagnosed with testicular, stomach and neck cancer in 2000 and has been in remission for almost 12 years, said he would never forget that “rough patch”, and was “so grateful” for his health.
“It hit home pretty hard because I was only 23 at the time,’’ he said. ‘‘But I had great support around me, everyone stuck together.”
Mr Nash (pictured with wife Belinda) was part of the Bacchus Marsh Foodworks team that raised more than $17,000.
He said being part of the annual relay gave him a sense of achievement and purpose, and he was already looking forward to his team raising even more money next year.
