Trio’s hunger for classroom success sparks show of community spirit

What started off as an idea for a university assessment has led to a community food drive helping Melton’s most disadvantaged residents.

Victoria University students Kelly McInerney, Darren Lancaster and Angus Jessel were required to complete the assessment as part of a certificate III in community services.

Their food-drive initiative gained momentum when Kurunjang, Coburn and Melton primary schools came on board to help collect goods.

Last week, the trio collected about 400 items from Kurunjang Primary School (pictured), which they will give to emergency food service Combined Churches Caring Melton to distribute.

Ms McInerney said the collection would help many people in Melton who were doing it tough. “The food will be distributed to disadvantaged families and people that meet the criteria, mainly families that might be struggling,” she said.

Mr Jessel said schools had been collecting food for about six weeks.

“Our assessment was all about creating a community project as a group,” he said. “I think we’ve done pretty well, we’ve just got to finish our evaluation.”
