FEATHERED FIENDS (Weekly, September 3)
■ I live right in the middle of it. More than happy
to listen to the guns go off every 10 minutes than hear another corella.

FIREFIGHTER CANCER COMPO (Weekly, September 3)
■ The Napthine government is bent on building
monuments for itself and not looking after community workers. Have
another read of the article of how Napthine had to escape through the
back door to avoid speaking to ambos.

RATES RISING
■ Answering the question of why the increase on our
latest rates notice exceeds CPI, Moorabool chief executive Rob Croxford
says it allows council to maintain service delivery but will not enable
it to reduce the infrastructure gap and provide new services to our
growing communities. Well, maybe if the council didn’t spend $26 million
on a heated pool that could be built for under $10 million our rates
would not have to go up. How many other projects are being blown out?
Who cares, it is not the council’s money, it just puts up rates when
more money is needed!

HELP FOR PARENTS OF TEENS
■ We know the teen years can be hell – both for the teenager and the parents.
To help parents make these difficult years easier, beyondblue and
the University of Melbourne have produced a new free e-booklet. It aims
to provide parents with practical advice on how to help their adolescent
children to avoid depression and anxiety.
Parenting during the teenage years can be tough anyway, and it’s
hard to distinguish normal teenage behaviour from the signs of more
serious mental health problems. Therefore, parents need to know the
difference and understand how they can help their kids.
There are proactive things parents can do to support their teens
as they develop into independent young adults: stay involved in their
lives, but encourage them to develop independence, support any
challenges they face, and try to minimise conflict at home.
How to prevent depression and clinical anxiety in your teenager: Strategies for parents can be downloaded at beyondblue.org.au
