Federal election: Labor to continue work in the west

The Gorton electorate will be represented by Labor MP Brendan
O’Connor for the next three years after he secured 51 per cent of
first-preference votes in Saturday’s federal election.

Mr O’Connor was first elected Gorton MP in 2004.

Australian Electoral Commission data reveals more than a quarter of Gorton constituents did not vote, with 26,087 no-shows from 102,122 enrolments. A total of 92 per cent of constituents voted in 2010.

There was a 6.9 per cent swing to Liberal party candidate Phil
Humphreys, who received 33 per cent of votes on a two-party preferred
basis.

Labor MP Catherine King was successful in the Ballarat electorate,
which includes Bacchus Marsh. She received 54.45 per cent of votes.

Mr O’Connor said Labor had achieved a lot in the western suburbs and he would continue that work in Gorton.

“I look forward to continuing my work representing the interests
of Melbourne’s west in the life of the 44th parliament ahead,” he said.

“I thank local residents for their continued support and I pledge
to continue advocating on the issues that matter to them. Only Labor
governments invest in the west.”
