Dinka artefacts an art form

An exhibition of Dinka artefacts made by a local artist has been
launched in Caroline Springs.

Mary Anwat handcrafted the
domestic pieces in Melton using wool, palm leaves and beans.

They can be
used as household items and for weddings, ceremonies, food production
and other cultural occasions.

Melton mayor Kathy Majdlik encouraged
residents to check out the exhibition at Caroline Springs Gallery.

“Mary’s pieces are beautifully crafted and for many of us would be
considered as works of art. But for Mary and her family, each item is
used for practical purposes in her village in South Sudan.”

Gourd spoons
and bowls are used for eating, collecting and drinking water, and
growing staples such as corn and wheat.

The exhibition finishes
September 27. Details: 9747 7200.
