Mystery of the cloth hits Blacksmith Cottage and Forge

BACCHUS Marsh Blacksmith Cottage and Forge volunteers Jean Lycette and Marjorie Goodchild (pictured) have a mystery on their hands.

An embroidered tablecloth, decorated with the names of World War I soldiers and a man’s face, was recently discovered at the forge, but volunteers have no idea where it came from.

The piece will be part of a textiles display on August 18.

“When I look at the tablecloth, I can just imagine a group of old ladies embroiding it, consoling each other over a cup of tea during war time,” Mrs Goodchild said.

The exhibition, at the cottage in Main Street, will showcase locally made weaving, spinning, patchwork, embroidery and knitworks.

The works will be displayed from 10am to 4pm. Entry is by gold coin donation. Details: 5367 3409.
