CFA crews from around Victoria attended a large-scale rescue training session in Fiskville at the weekend.
The course covered the basics of scene preservation, glass management, stabilisation and tool work. Crews were split into groups to work on new ideas.
The CFA said the aim of the inaugural event was to challenge firefighters, exposing them to scenarios involving heavy vehicles and cars as well as conventional two-car incidents.
Course instructor Russell Gray said: “The idea is to do this as methodically as possible, because most of the props we have here are much larger and more complicated than you would find at a normal road accident rescue training ground session.
“A lot more skill and teamwork is required to complete these tasks.”
Interest was such that the CFA is likely to run the course each year.
More than 50 volunteers took part.
Future courses may be held in two parts because of interest from other emergency services and organisations.
