Your Voice: July 3-9

Re: Julia Gillard: ‘We can win election’, Weekly online:

Let’s get a republic. Julia for president.

Tony

The Stable Population Party is running a candidate in Lalor, because Julia ‘no big Australia’ Gillard backflipped and pushed up population growth to record levels.

Stable Population Party

Yes, but she also believed that Labor would have won the election with her in charge.

Re: Julia Gillard: After kerfuffle, ‘big shoes to fill’, Weekly, July 2:

We love Julia and are appreciative of everything she has done for the community.

Toni

Julia Gillard did an amazing job given the difficulties placed before her every step of the way. The lack of respect shown to her as prime minister was appalling. She remained dignified in the toughest circumstances right to the end. The worst thing to happen to Australian politics was the hung parliament election result three years ago, ensuring instability over the period no matter who was in charge.

Thank you, Ms Gillard, for all of your achievements on our behalf. I didn’t agree with everything you did but you haven’t received due credit for the National Disability Insurance Scheme, National Broadband Network, Gonski, paid parental leave, the schoolkids’ bonus and much more. The ALP should win the election after all of those achievements.

Deb

I’m a westie and proud that we have had you serving our local community. So sad to see you leaving at the election.

Heather

Alliance works on mental health

For many years, government and business have failed to realise that good mental health in the workplace is just as important as physical safety.

Research shows that depression in the workplace costs Australia more than $12 billion every year.  But change came last week with the launch of the Mentally Healthy Workplace Alliance.

It’s the first time mental health organisations, business and government have committed to make workplaces mental health-friendly.

I am proud to partner with organisations such as the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Safe Work Australia to provide businesses with practical mental health advice and help create change.

The alliance is inviting all businesses to share their experiences at workplacementalhealth.com.au until July 28.

Responses will be used to create practical resources for businesses and for a report into the return of investment on creating mentally healthy workplaces.

Beyondblue’s association with the alliance is one of many projects it is undertaking over the next year. With evidence consistently showing mentally healthy workers are the most productive, any opportunity to create better workplaces is a win-win for employers and employees alike.

Beyondblue CEO Kate Carnell
