CATHOLICCare in Melton has received $50,000 to expand its Team Assimilation – Basketball and Soccer (TABS) project.
Gorton MP Brendan O’Connor visited the group (pictured) last week to announce the grant under the federal government’s diversity and social cohesion program.
The sports project aims to address racial intolerance towards newly arrived migrants in Melton, particularly in African and Burmese communities.
CatholicCare senior manager Nick Collins said the program had run for 12 months.
“CatholicCare, with the assistance of the diversity and social cohesion grants program, has provided sports clinics to 96 children and young people in basketball and 20 engaged in soccer.”
