WHEN she was younger, Anna Roy wanted to become a chef. But while she’s a keen supporter of healthy eating, it’s fair to say her career path has gone in a different direction.
Last week the Melton resident (pictured) presented her research into weight loss for people suffering from obesity and type 2 diabetes to members of the Rotary Club of Ballarat South, which is funding her PhD research at Victoria University in St Albans.
Three years into her study, she has found that targeting specific muscle receptors may hold the key to weight loss.
‘‘I’d ultimately like to work helping people with weight loss,” she said.
“I really enjoy working with food and wanted to be a chef. I started doing that but realised I had more of an interest in nutrition.”
Ms Roy hopes her research will lead to a weight-loss medication prescribed by doctors.
Preliminary tests had shown the possibility of 4 per cent decreases in body fat, “but we do need to do a lot more testing”.
