WALKERS wanting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people recognised in Australia’s Constitution were greeted by loud cheers when they arrived in Ballan last Tuesday.
About 50 people welcomed the Journey for Recognition walkers as they continued their trek from Melbourne’s Federation Square to the Northern Territory.
Wada Wurrung elder Uncle Bryon Powell (pictured right) led a “welcome to country” and smoking ceremony before performances and a community barbecue.
“It was so great, both at Bacchus Marsh and then at Ballan, that there were heaps of kids and indigenous community members there to greet us,” walker Shannan Dodson said.
