‘Yes’, but no cash for referendum

MOORABOOL council is backing the federal government’s push for local government to be recognised in the Australian Constitution but has baulked at providing financial support.

Prime Minister and Lalor MP Julia Gillard announced plans earlier this month for a referendum to be held when Australians go to the polls on September 14, to decide whether the Constitution should include financial recognition of local government and allow direct funding to councils.

The MAV has asked Victorian councils to raise $2 million to help fund a $10 million national campaign to promote the “yes” vote.

Based on Moorabool’s population and the council’s revenue, the MAV asked the municipality to contribute $12,132 to the campaign.

But Cr Tom Sullivan said the council should bypass payment. ‘‘It’s not good value for money,’’ he said. ‘‘You’d be better off spending the money on a street party.’’

Mayor Pat Toohey said ‘‘it would be like throwing money into the wind.’’

‘‘We’ve been given no advice with what they’ll do with the money,’’ he said.

‘‘It would be negligent to throw it away without knowing where every penny is going.’’

Cr Paul Tatchell said the referendum was nothing more than a political stunt. ‘‘It’s all about getting support, and heaven knows [Julia Gillard] needs it.’’

Melton council will provide $10,000 to the campaign.
