DISADVANTAGED youth from Melbourne’s north-west have been given a hands-on lesson in confidence at Melton fire station.
A group from not-for-profit organisation Youth Projects spent last Wednesday learning about teamwork, confidence and social skills. Youth Projects helps young people in straitened circumstances such as unemployment and homelessness or with alcohol and drug issues.
Youth Projects chairwoman Melanie Raymond said the workshop was designed to expand horizons and bolster confidence.
“They tried out the equipment and listened to advice from the firefighters on their journey into employment and how to get ahead,” she said.
“By opening up young people to a workplace visit in a range of areas is like a taster so they can start to feel positive; being unemployed can lead to despair.
“Sometimes you need an opportunity to see all the options to have your confidence boosted.”
