MELTON Centrals avenged their preliminary final loss to Romsey last year with a six-point win in the Riddell District Netball League.

The Centrals were knocked out of last year’s competition at the penultimate hurdle by the Redbacks, losing by 13 points.

But it was a different story at Romsey Park at the weekend. In a tight contest it was the first quarter which set up the victory. Melton hit 12 goals to six and the margin fluctuated around that number for the rest of the game, the Centrals winning 54-48.

Melton was never quite able to shake Romsey, led by stalwart Hope Hamilton who scored 35 goals. Goal attack Alyssa Cole hit 13, but the pairing of Renee Hulls (32) and Rebecca Morabito (22) proved too much for Romsey.

In other matches, Sam Spencer’s 38-goal haul helped Rupertswood to an eight-point win over Wallan. Zoe Boyle hit eight as Rupo won 46-38.

Riddell ran out 51-40 winners over Macedon, with Christine Harris scoring 29 goals, ably supported by skipper Yasmin McGregor, who hit 22.

Sunbury’s Kila Elavo had the biggest haul of the round, hitting 50 goals as the Kangaroos smashed Woodend-Hesket 74-32. Stef Rowe scored 32 as Diggers Rest comfortably beat Rockbank 51-25.

This weekend’s fixtures: Sunbury vs Broadford, Woodend-Hesket vs Romsey, Wallan vs Diggers Rest, Rockbank vs Riddell, Kilmore vs Macedon, Lancefield vs Melton Centrals.
