AMANDA Pollard vividly recalls the day that changed her life forever.
She hopes sharing her story of drink-driving with Melton youth will help curb risk-taking behind the wheel.
Ms Pollard is one of four speakers who will address a community road safety forum run by Victoria Police and Melton Council.
The April 10 forum is designed to educate teenagers who are new to the roads about safety and the consequences of their actions.
Ms Pollard’s life changed dramatically in April 2008, after she struck a man with her car as a result of drink-driving. Following the crash, she was jailed for a year.
She wants young people to understand the consequences of risk-taking behaviour.
“Making a split-second decision can turn your life upside down and I want them to hear from all perspectives,” Ms Pollard said.
“I injured someone and have to live with that regrettable decision every day.
“I was a very successful businesswoman, working for one of the leading financial institutions, and was on top of the world until my whole life turned upside down.
“I want young people to listen and hear first-hand the consequences and realities of what will happen if they engage in risky road behaviour.
“If my message gets through to at least one young driver that may save a life down the track.
“I want to turn my negative and very traumatic experience into a positive to help others.”
Melton’s Inspector Stephen Mutton said too many young people took risks by drink-driving and using mobile phones when driving. “Too often we see fatalities and serious injuries on our roads, and every single time it is nothing short of a tragedy,” he said.
“This forum is aimed at young drivers to show them that road safety is critical and that irresponsible behaviour behind the wheel can have devastating consequences.”
The forum is at the Melton Community Hall from 7-9.30pm on April 10.
