THE National Disability Insurance Scheme will have a profound impact on young school leavers, says Merrimu Services chief executive Frances O’Reilly.
“It will allow these people to dream, to follow their aspirations and goals,” she said.
“It will make a reality what most of us take for granted — joining a football club, assistance in getting a job or access to transport.”
Merrimu assists 140 disabled Melton and Bacchus Marsh adults.
Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show 5.8 per cent of Melton/Bacchus Marsh residents have a “profound or severe limitation” in communication, mobility and self care.
Ms O’Reilly said rollout of the NDIS — the first stage starts this year — would eventually remove the local waiting list for funding.
“Funding won’t be rationed out; there won’t be a lottery among people eligible for a portion of the limited funding,” Ms O’Reilly said.
People with disabilities, their families and carers met with service providers last week at a community forum hosted by Merrimu.
The event was an opportunity for people to get involved in design of the NDIS.
