Plan to ‘lock out’ Bacchus Marsh tourists

VICROADS has been accused of “road-locking” tourism in Bacchus Marsh.

Bacchus Marsh Tourism Association member Tina Serilis is disappointed the new traffic strategy does not allow for pedestrian access between Moon Reserve and Hopetoun Cemetery.

“The cemetery and surrounds is a place of major historical significance within the state of Victoria and is recognised for still being within its original rural setting,” she said.

“The cemetery would be road-locked by the proposed new plan and this would limit the opportunity for our community and visitors.”

The association has been raising funds for a feasibility study into a walking trail from the end of the Avenue of Honour to the cemetery.

“The opportunity to create a walking trail . . . is impacted by the new road proposal,” Ms Serilis said.

VicRoads project director Trevor Boyd said the authority would investigate a crossing of the Lerderderg River and Western Freeway for pedestrians and cyclists.
