Teamwork and learning to be the best possible dancers are priority focuses for teachers and students at Peter Faux Dance Ensemble in Melton.
“Ensemble literally means ‘together’, so we dance together, not in competition with each other,” principal Peter Faux says, adding: “True competition is competing with the self to be the best, not against anyone else.
“In any professional dance company, artists dance together to present a performance, not compete individually for the audience’s attention.”
The 28-year-old company has classes in contemporary dance, hip-hop, jazz, tap, classical, and Garuda and Pilates.
“A strong emphasis is placed on good technique so students develop co-ordination, timing, balance and rhythm, which helps them with sports, not just dance,” Peter says.
He says ‘dance industry’ is now a generic term describing any form of movement. But what he teaches his students — ‘dance technique’ — is more specific.
“Dance technique is the only movement that uses all the body’s muscles rather than just sport-specific ones.”
Peter has been dancing since he was 12 and was the first male to win the prestigious Enrico Cecchetti medal.
He has a Cecchetti Diploma, has worked with the Australian Ballet, presented workshops for teachers and dancers, judged at competitions and taught Pilates for more than 20 years.
