Melton Thoroughbreds were able to hold off the Whittlesea Pacers to get their fourth win of the Big V men’s division 2 season on Saturday night.

The Thoroughbreds jumped out of the blocks with a 21-9 first quarter to take control of the game.

The Thoroughbreds shot at 60 per cent from the field in the first 10 minutes, while the Pacers shot at just 33 per cent.

The Pacers started to find their shot a bit better in the second quarter and were able to reduce the margin to eight points at the main break.

Both teams shot well from the field in the third quarter, with the Thoroughbreds also shooting well from beyond the three-point line.

The margin remained at eight points heading into the final break.

The Pacers saved their best for last, but it wasn’t enough, with the Thoroughbreds holding on to win 72-68.

Dau Akol top scored with 19 points, while Maluk Adut and Liam Allison also scored double figures for the Thoroughbreds.

The win means the Thoroughbreds are now a game clear of bottom side Surf Coast.

This week the Thoroughbreds host Mildura on Saturday night.

The Thoroughbreds youth league division 2 side had a tough night against the Wallan Panthers on Saturday night.

Scores were level at quarter time after a high scoring first quarter.

The Panthers blew the game open in the second quarter, scoring 32 to 16, to lead by 16 points at half time.

The margin was increased to 21 points at the final break.

With the game over, the scoring slowed for both teams. The Thoroughbreds won the final quarter by two points, to lose overall 97-74.

Cooper McIntosh was the standout for the Thoroughbreds with 28 points.

The Thoroughbreds remain fourth in their pool.

This weekend they host the Chelsea Gulls on Saturday night before heading up the highway to face the Albury Wodonga Bandits on Sunday.

It was another tough weekend for the Thoroughbreds youth league division 2 side.

The winless Thoroughbreds were no match for the Wallan Panthers, losing 101-36.

The Panthers controlled each of the first three quarters to lock up the result early on.

In a positive sign for the Panthers, they were outscored just 17-16 in the final term, showing a never die attitude.

Amier Majur top scored with 11 points, as all eight players hit the scoreboard.

The Thoroughbreds have a bye this weekend.
