Teen champ aims high

Don’t let his age fool you … Cesur Afacan packs an almighty punch.

The 13-year-old is a rising star of the Australian boxing scene, and his wins and title collection continue to stack up.

After claiming his first Victorian title last year, Afacan has now lifted his game to another level.

The Creekside College student travelled to Queensland earlier this month to compete in the Australian championships.

Afacan left the event with a perfect 2-0 record and an Australian title under his belt.

Both Afacan’s wins came via eight-count technical knockouts (TKOs) in the under 46-kilogram division.

“The first fight, I knew he was going to be a stronger fighter because he was shorter. I just tried to keep my distance with him,” Afacan said.

“On the second one, I was really happy with how I went as well.

“To be able to win, it was very overwhelming. It was the best feeling.”

While some in the sport may consider him young, Afacan has experience well beyond his years.

He first stepped into a ring when he was four.

Now the teenager is training twice a day, six days a week.

“I liked the discipline about it, the training … it takes a lot of time to be good at it, but it is all worth it,” he said.

“I do a lot of skipping, shadow boxing and a lot of hard work.”

Afacan has no plans to slow down and is already focusing on his next major tournament.

He is aiming to compete in the junior World Championships in Russia later this year.
