Strikers high hopes

Westside Strikers’ destiny is in their own hands in the FV state league 4 west competition.

The Strikers sit second after 16 rounds, two points behind the Keilor Wolves, who are aiming for two straight promotions.

But the Strikers have one game in hand, with a catch up match to be played later this season.

Strikers president Sam Raniolo said things were traveling along okay. The club has lost just one game, back in round three.

“Form wise we’re happy with the way the boys have been playing,” he said. “We’ve had a few injuries and other players have stepped up.

“We’re continuing to take it one week at a time.”

With the battle for top spot and promotion to likely go down to the final round, Raniolo said they know they are in control of their own destiny.

“We have a game in hand and it will likely come down to that game,” he said. “We need to keep winning every game and then our season is in our own hands.

“After what has happened the last couple of years, this year we wanted to have a real push at promotion.

“We signed some extra players to help with that.”

Raniolo said that their injured players were starting to return to the pitch and they were hopeful of having their full side available in the next few weeks

He said the side had been good enough to cover those losses, showing their depth.

The Strikers this week face Spring Hills in the local derby. The Stallions are last with just one win for the season as they rebuild their squad.

Raniolo said they were looking forward to the match.

“It’s not going to be easy,” he said. “They lost to Laverton 3-1.

“They’ve shown a lot of improvement.”
