The top three grades in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association are still set to get underway on Saturday.
With heavy rain leaving grounds in poor shape and more rain predicted between now and the weekend, many competitions don’t seem likely to get play underway.
GDCA’s competition’s manager Rob McIntyre said they had made a call on the weekend’s play.
“Councils have had difficulty getting machinery onto many grounds, particularly in the Macedon Ranges region, to uncover pitches, carry out repairs to damaged areas of ovals after football season and mow grass due to the softness of surfaces.
“Unfortunately, there is more rain forecast for the next few days which will further hamper access to these ovals.
“Originally, there were five senior divisions to commence this Saturday but, with grounds being unplayable, the GDCA board has decided to cancel all division 1 and 2 matches for round one. Only McIntyre Cup, Johnstone Shield and Jensen Shield matches will be played depending on weather conditions.”
