Diggers Rest Burras win well but drop spot

A best-on-ground performance by Jason Williams helped Diggers Rest to a solid 23-point win against Lancefield in the Riddell District Football League on Saturday.

Williams was everywhere his side needed him, winning a lot of important contests around the ground and hitting the scoreboard with three goals.

While he looked right at home, his teammates were made to struggle desperately to secure the four points.

Despite going into the match as favourites, Diggers Rest ran into a fired- up Lancefield determined to take it up to last season’s runners-up.

However, the Burras came out of the half-time break in fighting form, booting six third-term goals to seal their victory.

Also in the action for Diggers Rest was Mark Freeth, who booted three goals, while Brent Tuckey, Patrick Jackson and Jamerson Campbell all kicked two in the 16.19 (115) – 14.8 (92) win.

In spite of its win, Diggers Rest dropped two places on the ladder to sit in sixth spot. But the Burras are just four points behind top-of-the table Romsey.

In other games

Rockbank’s RDFL struggles continued in their 112-point loss against Macedon on Saturday.

The Rams couldn’t hit the scoreboard early, conceding 10 of the first 11 goals.

Although they were able to find the big sticks with more frequency after half-time, the damage was done.

Led by Shaun Harrison and Jason Cooke, Macedon went on to kick a further 14 second-half goals to secure the 24.12 (156) – 7.2 (44) win.

Harrison finished the contest with six goals, while Cooke booted five.

For Rockbank, Lachlan Calder continued his good form with three majors, while Matthew Marshall and Harley Cameron were impressive.

The weekend’s loss is Rockbank’s sixth of the season and drops the Rams to 10th on the RDFL ladder.

The fixture isn’t about to get any easier with the Rams to play fourth-placed Riddell this week.

Elsewhere in round eight, Sunbury Kangaroos defeated Broadford, Riddell got the better of Kilmore, and Woodend-Hesket was too good for Wallan.
