The Riddell District Football League has named a strong training squad ahead of AFL Victoria Community Championships with the Central Highlands Football League on May 19.

The squad announced last week contains 52 players representing nine clubs and is to be coached by Broadford coach Arron Bray for second straight year.

This year’s squad includes a mix of regular interleague players and some new faces.

Rupertswood has the most players in the squad, with half of their best team selected.  New Sharks’ Kayne Murphy, Leigh Wellington and John Barnard are among those selected.

Brett Chambers, who co-captained the interleague side last season, is again among the players who could be selected in the final team.

Ten of last year’s premiership side has been selected in the squad, including Jack Mills who kicked the winning goal in the RDFL’s interleague win against Neapan Football League in 2015.

Diggers Rest and Riddell both have six players in the squad, while Wallan which is 3-0, has five players in the squad.

Romsey also has five players in the squad, with last year’s interleague best player Daniel Toman among four Woodend-Hesket players chosen.

Sunbury Kangaroos have three players picked, with new Melton Centrals forward Dylan Weir has been selected alongside team mate Blake Henderson the others in the squad.

The squad contains four  sets of brothers, Rupertswood’s Todd and Dylan Podolczak, Woodend-Hesket’s Benjamin and Daniel Toman, Riddell’s Paul Sahlberg and Michael Sahlberg, and Romsey’s Chris and Matthew Burkett.

The RDFL is looking to get back-to-back wins in the AFL Victoria Community Championships, having easily accounted for West Gippsland last year.

The RDFL kicked 10 goals to five after halftime to win 18.15 (123) to 10.11 (71)
