North Western Titans love the challenge

North Western Titans continue to improve in Baseball Victoria’s Summer League Women’s division 3.

In their first season, the goal for the Titans has always been to get out on the field and have some fun while learning.

While they are yet to get their first win, coach Jeff Ostler said they were improving every week.

“We’ve got new players showing up every week,” he said.

“We’re up to 13 players, which is good, as not everyone can play every week.

“They’re continually learning and scoring more runs each week. They’re having a ball.”

Ostler said the side’s batting and glove work was coming on well, but at times it was struggling to defend and was yet to attain the pitching depth required.

Despite that, he said everything was going to plan as the players continue to learn the game.

On Saturday, the Titans lost to Berwick City Cougars 18-10.

Ostler said Kim Borg, in her first game for the Titans, was the game’s standout and was able to help dry up the Cougar runs when she came on to pitch.

Having previously played baseball with Bacchus Marsh and Werribee, she will add knowledge to the side.

Ostler said Karina Colquhoun had been the standout in the season so far. She makes the trip down from Maryborough every week to play.

The coach said they would love to get a win before the season is out to help foster the side’s confidence even more.

He said they weren’t that far off the Cougars and believe that they could beat them.

The Titans are on the bottom of the ladder, two games behind the Cougars.

“Everyone is getting down to trying and girls are coming down to try it out,” Ostler said.

“We’re trying to grow the sport, so the more the merrier.”

On Sunday, the men’s side had a dark day against Ormond Glenhuntly Blue in division 3.

In their worst scoreline of the season, the Titans lost 36-0 against the second-placed side.

The Titans are sitting in fifth place with two wins.

Ostler, who is also the club president, said things were going really well off field, with a good vibe around the club as it continued to grow.

This week the women’s side will face Werribee/Footscray and the men’s team will plays St Kilda Saints.
