North Western Titans played through the rain to secure a key win in the Baseball Victoria women’s division 3 west competition on the weekend.
With rain pouring throughout most of the afternoon, it was anything but easy for the Titans and their opponent, Geelong Baycats Blue. Titans’ president Danny Haymes, who umpired the game, said had they had an official umpire the game may not have gone ahead.
“There were a couple of times I was close to calling it,” he said.
“It rained for 90 per cent of the game. “It was really trying conditions.”
“We wanted to play and it had taken some of the Geelong players more than an hour to get there.
“You want them to play when they can.”
In their first game back in the new year, the Titans came away with a 15-6 win.
Haymes said they got off to a slow start with Geelong scoring most of their runs in the first innings.
Once the Titans got going they put in a strong performance. “We got off to a slow start, Geelong was just hitting the ball well,” he said.
“It wasn’t us making errors. “Some of those players have played a couple of games. We got into our groove and we were fine and were quite dominant after that.”
Haymes said it was a clinical team performance from the side.
He said the difference in the game was that while Geelong relied on three or four players, the Titans had contributors throughout the whole team.
Kim Borg in her return from injury, hit the ball well for the Titans. Kate Rigby pitched the whole game and was another standout.
The win moves the Titans to second spot with three rounds before finals.
Haymes said they had a hard run home, with matches against two other top four sides the next couple of weeks.
On Sunday, the Titans men’s side had a tough day against Springvale Lions. Fielding one of their strongest sides, the Titans lost 11-0.
